On April 2, we will address another complex topic – the reduction of global poverty – the turnaround poverty (🔗 to the event website). We kindly ask you to 🔗Register for this event.

Since summer 2023, we at the Club of Rome – Austrian Chapter have been working on an Austria-wide campaign to create a positive vision of the necessary transformation or, as in the Report „Earth4All“ describes, to implement a “Giant Leap” in Austria.

The poverty turnaround shows that rapid, fair and environmentally friendly economic growth is possible in all low-income countries, but that this requires a new economic model. We are talking here about income disparities in a global context and between countries. Poverty and inequality within countries addresses the reversal of inequality.

The turnaround in poverty is also based on three fundamental levers:

Today’s global financial system, trade agreements and technology exchange must be restructured in order to expand the political scope and curb the debt of low-income countries. Currently, their room for maneuver is severely limited by the multiple burdens of poverty, the fight against global warming and high interest rates.

The re-regionalization of trade and the transformation of global trade are necessary to protect current low-income economies. “No one would force a lightweight boxer to fight a heavyweight” (Earth4All, 2022) This includes many aspects such as reviewing the role of CO2 emissions within trade agreements, aligning regional production with demand or protecting industrial sectors that are not yet competitive.

Event on April 2nd

We will discuss the opportunities and possibilities of such a “turnaround” at a public event in cooperation with Oesterreichische Kontrollbank AG (OeKB AG) and Oesterreichische Entwicklungsbank AG (OeEB AG). on 2.4.2024 in Vienna.

As a board member of the Austrian Development Bank AG, Sabine Gaber (also Vice President of the Club of Rome – Austrian Chapter) is familiar with the levers and structures of the global financial system and will present a keynote speech on this topic:“Poverty Reduction in the Face of Global Challenges“.

We will then discuss the issues in two high-profile panels:

  1. How does the international financial system need to be transformed to enable low-income countries to meet the twin challenges of poverty and climate change?
  2. How must global trade agreements be transformed to support low-income countries – especially with regard to green technology exchange?
