
Dr. Friedrich Hinterberger has been a member since 2004 and played a key role in shaping the Austrian Chapter over many years. From 2006 to 2025, he served continuously in various functions on the board – initially as a board member, later as secretary, vice president, and secretary general. His contributions and dedication significantly shaped the Club for more than a decade. We sincerely thank him for his long-standing commitment and valuable work toward a sustainable future.

Born in 1959, studied economics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and obtained his doctorate at the Justus Liebig University Giessen.
From 1985-1991, he was a research assistant at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. Scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation.
Since 1985, he lectures at universities in Germany and abroad.
1993-2000 Collaboration at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, head of the working group on ecological economics and ecological economic policy.
1999-2020 Founding President of the Sustainable Europe Research Institute (SERI).
Since 2019 Senior Scientist at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and since 2022 also at the University of Salzburg.
Main areas of work: Ecological Economics, Scenarios for sustainable economies and societies, Transdisciplinary research, Quality of life research.
2018-2025 Vice President of the Austrian Chapter of the Club of Rome.
