International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture
|
|
In November 2001, the "International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and
Agriculture" was adopted by a FAO conference through Resolution 3/2001.
The treaty sets up a legal framework for plant genetic resources and sharing of benefits from cultivars.
On 29 June 2004 (90 days after 40 governments had ratified it) the treaty came into force.
According to FAO the treaty is "vital in ensuring the continued availability of the plant genetic resources that countries will need to feed their people."
