La Granja de San Ildefonso: Eradicating Hunger in the Context of World Crises

Ricardo Diez Hochleitner with students attending the Course
July 5: As part of the Summer Course organised by the Spanish Chapter of the Club of Rome and the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Ricardo Díez Hochleitner, Honorary President of the CoR, lectured on Freedom and Ethics in the face of Crises, in which he stressed that freedom and ethics in life and social coexistence are once again the most generalized and urgent aspiration of our day, in spite of progress and a civilization of universal values. The acute crisis of ethical and moral values observed everywhere is the greatest and most severe of all the many other crises and challenges that currently afflict humanity.
Pacific coexistence of Man with Nature, that is, the requirement to live in harmony is now as necessary in the sad present reality of multiple and simultaneous deterioration of the biosphere as it is in the face of evermore plentiful and severe future threats.
We now stand before the need of a great human revolution coming out of science, education and culture. We have to get past the view of Man as conqueror and exploiter of nature and on to Man as the administrator and friend of nature, on a feasible, sustainable basis.
We must try to create a new human conscience, an ethical structure for survival and sustainable progress, taking the best of the wisdom of all the world’s peoples and cultures.
