Vienna: Peter Zoellner re-elected as President

December 2010: During its General Assembly, the Austrian Chapter reviewed past activities and
discussed future plans. Dr. Peter Zoellner was re-elected as President of the Chapter,
Dr. Michaela Moritz and KR Martin Essl were elected as Vice Presidents. Further Members of the Board for the period 2010-2012 are:

Ljubljana: Sustainability and Space Exploration

December 7: Space might provide new opportunities for sustainable solutions to the contemporary
challenges. The conference "Sustainability and space exploration" discussed long-
term sustainability effects of space exploration. Can space exploration support
achieving sustainable development on the global scale? Is space exploration sustainable
itself? What about exploration of space for energy supply, raw materials etc.?
The conference was organized by the Slovenian Association for the Club of Rome, the
Croatian Association for the Club of Rome and the
European Support Centre.

Ottawa: Changing Role of Science and Expertise in Society.
December 7: Frank Graves, President EKOS Research, posed the question whether there will
be a new dark age
Is the role of science and expertise becoming peripheral to the major decisions faced by North American and global society? Is there a growing gap which means that key leaders no longer turn to scientific experts for advice, preferring other sources?

Brussels: Perspectives on South Asia
December 6: the Harvard Club of Belgium jointly with
the Club of Rome EU Chapter organized a conference in Brussels.
Among the speakers were:
- His Excellency Mr. Shaukat Aziz, former Prime Minister of Pakistan,
- Mr. Jonathan Paris, former Fellow at the Council for Foreign Relations,

Ottawa: Climate Change - The Science Advances While Action Stalls
November 18: John M R Stone gave a presentation about the gap between knowledge and action
John M R Stone is currently an Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of
Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton Universiry. Prior to retirement
he served as Executive Director (Climate Change) of the Meteorological Service
of Canada, Environment Canada.

Vienna: Searching for the 6th Kondratieff Cycle

November 17: It is possible that the recent financial crisis marks the end of
the 5th Kontratieff cycle and we are entering the 6th wave.
The Austrian Chapter and the European Support Centre of the Club of Rome organized a seminar
with CoR Member Markku Wilenius. He discussed whether
the drivers for the 6th cycle will emanate from environmental and bio-
based technologies.

November 12: The Hungarian and Austrian Association and the European Support Centre organized an event which discussed
- the impact of economic crises on the health situation of the younger generation,

Vienna: Which is the State of the Planet?

November 3: A Seminar with Sheila Murray, President of the Canadian Association for the Club of Rome, was held in Vienna.
Sheila Murray presented her communications initiative. Simple questions about the state of the planet and people's plans
what to do about it involved her in a number of inspiring dialogues.

In addition, she presented the working mode of the Canadian Association for the Club of Rome, including the regular seminars and the
new journal "watershed". Bob Murray, Webmaster of CACOR, outlined the communications strategy of the Association. A flyer about the seminar

Winterthur, Vaduz, Schaffhausen: General Assembly of the International Club

October 27: The public part of the General Assembly 2010 of the International Club started on October 27 in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, with
an international seminar on the global trends that will drive the future of finance:
Preparing for the Future: The Role of Finance.
October 28: A public event was held in Winterthur. Themes were:
- Happiness: A World unknown to the “homo oeconomicus” – New pathways
for Sustainable Wealth. (Workshop Language: GERMAN),
- Modelling and Systems Dynamics: A Workshop about the (un)predictability of Complex Systems in
a Globalised World. (Workshop Language: ENGLISH),
- Mobility: Switzerland as a role model for the Future of Transport?
(Workshop Language: GERMAN),
- Growth: The Future of a much-criticised Concept. (Workshop Language:
ENGLISH).
October 29: The General Assembly of the Members took place in Winterthur.
October 30: A seminar "Sustainability in Practice - Hands-on Approaches towards Resource and Energy" took place in
Schaffhausen.

Hamburg: Anniversary Colloquium for Uwe Moeller

October 18: On the occasion of the anniversary of Uwe Moeller, the German Association of the Club of Rome organized a colloquium
in Hamburg.
Uwe Moeller has been Secretary-General of the Club of Rome 1998-2007 and Co-Founder of the German Association. During this term,
the International Club gained significantly momentum and the European Support Centre was established as office for the National
Associations.
