Dubrovnik: Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems
Sept 30 - Oct 3: University of Zagreb and Instituto Superior Tecnico invited to the 5th Dubrovnik conference on sustainable development,
energy, water and environment systems. The event was
partnered by UNESCO
and the Croatian, Slovenian, Austrian Associations and European Support Centre of the Club of Rome.
CoR Members Ivo Šlaus and Aleksander Zidanšek organized a special session on "Interconnected Crises: Energy, Climate,
Demography and Economy - New Approaches to Solutions."

Vienna: Ashok Khosla Speaking at IAEA
Sept 15: Mohamed ElBaradei, Director General of the IAEA opened the scientific
forum on Energy for Development during the General Assembly of the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Ashok Khosla, Co-President of the Club of Rome, gave a keynote speech at the event with the title "The Future of Energy
and Energy for the Future".

In his speech, Ashok Khosla analysed
the lack of energy justice.
He outlined various categories of energy conservation and addressed the issue of energy
use for food production.
He outlined possible future scenarios:
- the business as usual scenario which would result in further resource scarcity and probably
population growth as a result of poverty,
- the alternative scenario of Development Alternatives which includes a wide variety of
improvements by a leap frog approach and disruptive technologoes which provide a factor 50
of resource efficiency.

European Dialogue on Internet Governance

September 14,15: The European Support Centre of the Club of Rome continues its partnership with the European Dialogue on Internet Governance which had been started last year.
The 2009 meeting is being held in Geneva at the European Broadcasting Union. The event is rather shaped as an open space which makes it possible for participants from all over Europe to share their
views on critical aspects of Internet governance and privacy.

September 4: Global Challenges like Climate Change in the Southern part of South America and approaches for solutions such as
geoengineering were the focus of a conference in Buenos Aires which was jointly organized by the Argentinean,
Brazilian and Brussels-EU Chapter of the Club of Rome.

Reducing Resource Consumption ?

September 2: Dennis Meadows, Member of the U.S. Association for the Club of Rome, gave a presentation in Vienna with the title "Priorities for Reducing the Use of Energe and Materials".

Fishbanks and Systems Thinking

September 2: A seminar on Systems Thinking was held in Vienna. Representatives from the Hungarian, German and Austrian Chapter
of the Club of Rome met Dennis Meadows,
co-author of the LIMITS TO GROWTH and member of the US Association of the Club of Rome.
Participants were introduced to the simulation Fishbanks and further training ideas.

Participants tried to find a way of sustainable resource mangagement - which proved to be rather difficult.
Club of Rome Member Franz Josef Radermacher will talk about globalisation and the consequences

DESERTEC: Industry Engages in Unique Project

July 13: Industrial leaders from Europe and the Mediterranean area will join to form the DESERTEC Industrial Initiative (DII) with
the mission to transform European energy supplies.
DESERTEC, an initiative of the German Association of the Club of Rome, has created a new vision of energy supply based on a joint cooperation between countries, regions,
big companies and smaller industries to harvest the power of the sun.
The founding meeting of the DESERTEC Industrial Initiative (DII) will be held on July 13, 2009 by invitation of Münchener Rück and the DESERTEC Foundation.
