During the last years of the past century, Buenos Aires became a global city. The process brought global dynamism and also the challenges of globalization in its three dimensions: environmental, economical and social.

In Buenos Aires, environmental problems, such as waste, carbon emissions and water pollution, cannot be solved by a technological approach alone. There are socio-economical aspects involved.

Ecological problems are, in a great measure, dysfunctions of social nature, generated by distortions in the economic functioning of a society.

Buenos Aires is now committed to search sustainable solutions, such as waste and carbon reductions, fresh water treatment, etc.

The presentation will discuss the pressing problems and approaches for their solution.

Silvia Zimmermann del Castillo is an Argentinean writer and philosopher.

She studied Philosophy at the National University of Buenos Aires, followed studies on Social and Cultural Anthropology at l´ École Pratique des Hautes Études, in Paris and has been disciple and assistant of the celebrated Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges.
