European Agricultural Controversies

About the Statement

The statement will discuss GMO use, organic farming, biofuels, biodiversity and food, and the case of Ukraine: in search of a balance.

Recent trends in the European agriculture reveal a number of sustainability controversies between the use of

  • genetically modified organisms (GMO) to overcome the world’s shortage of foodstuffs and the perspectives of environmentally friendly organic farming that excludes them;
  • GMO for biofuels to decrease the energy dependence on fossil fuels and external energy sources and the problem of conservation of biodiversity;
  • land for biofuels production and the growing demand for food.
This poses a problem of striking a right balance between the obviously contradicting challenges. Ukraine as a country with great agricultural potential based on its fertile soils and strong agricultural traditions also faces these controversies and is now in search of a balance.
