European Conference
of the National Associations
of the Club of Rome

23-24 May 2008, Bucharest, Romania

hosted by the Romanian Association for the Club of Rome in co-operation with the European Support Centre

Which forces are driving Europe? There are initiatives for sustainable development and a joint legal framework but also short term economic interests and national egoism. And of course internal challenges like ageing of the population, lack of own energy resources and external ones like climate change and degradation of global ecosystems have a major impact. Many of these forces are competing and try to move Europe into opposite directions.

The Conference "Which Forces Are Driving Europe" discussed the challenges and went beyond the Eurocentric perspective. All humans are embedded in the same global biosphere and depend on its services - both on terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Europe has to get on a sustainable pathway - in co-operation with other continents. The participants of the conference had a deeper look at the driving forces of Europe in a global context, analysed their direction and strengths, and discussed the adequacy of European and global political strategies.

The event consisted of a public and an internal part. In order to read more about the results, please follow the navigation on the left.
