Civil Society Monitoring the EU Strategy for Sustainable Development

From Commenting to Shared Ownership

Thomas Schauer, Raoul Weiler, Daniel Schaubacher (Eds.)

How can we make the renewed EU strategy more successful? This was one of the ques- tions which led to the symposium "Civil Society Monitoring the EU Strategy for Sustainable Development - From Commenting to Shared Ownership" organized in Brussels in April 2006 by the Brussels-EU Chapter and the European Support Centre of the Club of Rome in co-operation with the Austrian EU Presidency. At a stakeholder meeting organised by the EESC in March 2006, many representatives from NGOs had expressed their disappointment with the implemen- tation of the old strategy. Therefore, the symposium also tried to analyse the obstacles which prevented practical success of the old strategy and to give recommendations related to the par- ticipation of civil society in the monitoring and implementation of the renewed strategy for sus- tainable development.
