Introduction
CLIMATE CHANGE AND SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES
The Fight Against Climate Change
and the Opportunities for Human Development
20.11.2009
In collaboration with the Club of Rome, the Spanish Chapter organized a conference on Climate Change and Social Consequences which was held
on 20th November 2009 in CaixaForum Barcelona.
In light of the debates previous to the Copenhagen Summit, it has been declared once again that the fight against climate change can
only be accomplished taking into consideration many interdependencies.
The possible solutions include economic opportunities and emphasize human development and intergenerational solidarity.
Consequently, the Club of Rome which just dedicated its annual conference on the topic of Climate, Energy and Economic Change,
proposed in collaboration with the Spanish Chapter supported by Agbar, Gas Natural y la Obra Social de la Caixa and with organizational
support by the Catalan Chapter adressed the topic from the perspective of
quality of life and intended to highlight a new conscience that promotes and facilitates sustainability.
The Conference aimed at insight of the situation prior to the Copenhagen Summit and intended to increase
knowledge about the risks as well as about economic consequences.
It also aimed at investigating the options for sustainable development and distributed the most
recent contributions derived from debates of the Club of Rome.
- What do we need to do in order to gain new prosperity for people and societies?
- What will be the results of actions in enterprises and cities but also of the social actions of each human on the Blue Planet?
- How to increase efficiency of the usage of resources like water and energy? Especially energy is a
determining factor.
- It is also necessary to add the visions of younger generations that are better able to imagine a no carbon economy.
Finally, the conference informed about current plans of the Club of Rome and about the politics of the
Generalitat de Catalunya related to climate change.
